UP, UP, AND AWAY

The enclosed environment of an airplane can pose problems for some asthmatics because the interior of the aircraft often contains high concentrations of allergens and irritants.  Despite quick cleanings between flights, the passenger seats frequently contain dust mites and their allergenic waste.  Cleaning products can leave chemical residue in the air.  As passengers board, the air quality may degrade further from perfumes, foods, and pet dander.   Even though the air circulated throughout the aircraft is filtered, many irritating particles that can cause asthmatic reactions still remain.  Asthma sufferers should carry their rescue medications with them onto the airplane to use if needed.  Check with the airline before flying about current security regulations regarding medical supplies that can be taken aboard.

P.S.   Staying hydrated during a flight with water rather than alcohol can minimize potential asthma symptoms and reduce the effects of jet lag.
