SHELL SHOCK

There is no cure for a shellfish allergy.  Avoiding the consumption of shellfish requires diligence since complete avoidance is the only way to ensure that you will not experience a reaction. There are two “families” of shellfish: mollusks, which include clams and oysters, and crustaceans, such as shrimp and crayfish. Unfortunately, although crustaceans must be listed on food labels, the same is not true of mollusks. Those with a shellfish allergy who inadvertently consume some  may experience wheezing, abdominal pain, nausea, and diarrhea. More extreme reactions, including anaphylaxis, can be potentially fatal. To avoid reactions, do not eat shellfish or any products that indicate shellfish on the label. Medical care should be sought when experiencing adverse symptoms after ingesting shellfish.

P.S. If you have an allergy, you should carry an alert card describing your issues or wear a medical alert bracelet.
