PERENNIAL ALLERGIES
Allergies that persist year-round are called perennial allergies. These allergies are usually triggered by exposure to environmental allergens like dust mites that are present throughout the year. Similar to seasonal allergies that are triggered by various pollens, perennial allergies also have an inflammatory response in the mucous membranes that line the nose and sinuses. Symptoms occur in phases: The early phase can occur within minutes of exposure and cause itchy, watery eyes; sneezing; and runny nose. The late phase may occur hours later and include additional symptoms such as nasal congestion, post-nasal drip, sore throat, and loss of the senses of smell and taste. Allergists can test for specific allergy triggers and prescribe medications to reduce irritating symptoms.
P.S. Perennial allergies that are left untreated may result in sinus infections that require antibiotic treatments.
