NICKEL ALLERGY

Do certain types of jewelry give you a skin rash and cause your skin to redden and itch uncontrollably? If so, you may have a nickel allergy. Nickel is found in many common, everyday items, including earrings, watchbands, rings, and necklaces. Nickel allergy is a contact allergy, meaning the allergen is usually restricted to the site of contact. Once a nickel allergy has developed, it is generally a chronic condition. This doesn’t mean, however, that you can’t wear jewelry; you simply need to be  selective in your choices. Hypoallergenic materials, pure sterling silver, stainless steel, polycarbonate plastic, and solid gold that is at least twelve carats are all viable choices. An allergist can test you for a nickel allergy.

P.S. When piercing ears for the first time, make sure the earrings are high quality gold or stainless steel studs.
