MIND OVER ASTHMA
Biofeedback therapy is the practice of gaining some degree of control over functions that are normally involuntary including heart rate, blood pressure, and body temperature, and it can be used to treat conditions such as migraines, chronic pain, and potentially asthma. Because biofeedback has been proven to influence heart rate, it may also be capable of improving lung function and airway flow, which could help asthma patients have fewer asthma-related symptoms. In a test study, patients practicing biofeedback were able to reduce their use of inhaled corticosteroids significantly and showed improvement in the severity of their asthma symptoms. The motivation behind the study was to use the therapy in addition to traditional asthma medications, not to replace them.
P.S. Biofeedback uses machines such as heart rate monitors to teach people how to control the body’s automatic functions.
