MILKY WAY

Milk allergy is one of the three most common allergies affecting young children, and it is often detected within the first few months of life.  This allergy is caused by an abnormal response by the body’s immune system to the proteins in milk.  Symptoms may develop quickly and can include skin rashes (especially around the mouth), hives, and wheezing.  A milk allergy is different from lactose intolerance.  Intolerance to the sugar in milk does not involve the immune system and produces very different, digestive-type symptoms.  Bloating, gas, and diarrhea are common signs of lactose intolerance and occur after milk, or products containing milk, have been consumed.  Allergy testing is necessary to confirm the existence of a true milk allergy.

P.S.   Cow’s milk is the usual cause of a milk allergy, but milk from sheep and goats can also trigger allergic reactions.
