LATE BLOOMERS

Many people think of asthma as a childhood condition. Although the preponderance of cases manifest themselves at an early age, asthma can develop later in life. A later developing case may easily be misidentified as bronchitis or COPD since the overt symptoms, including coughing, wheezing, and breathing issues, are similar. A specific physical examination and testing of the lung functions can identify asthma in an adult. Weight gain during the adult years can increase the chances of asthma development. In addition, hormonal fluctuations and repeated exposure to certain environmental conditions over the years may trigger adult asthma. Allergies can also become asthma risks for adults. If you are an adult who suspects that you have asthma, see your allergist.

P.S.  Those who develop asthma as adults must be consistent with their prescribed treatment plans to benefit from them.
