IS THAT A NEW BRUISE?

Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease that is often controlled on a long-term basis with inhaled corticosteroid medications.  These asthma medications usually have fewer side effects than those that are taken orally. Most people understand and accept that many prescription medications do have side effects.  Literature provided with prescription drugs usually lists potential side effects.  Although inhaled corticosteroids can sometimes lead to thinning skin and easy bruising, these side effects are ordinarily not severe. However, the effects may increase in prevalence with advancing age, dosage, and/or duration of use.  Of course, not everyone experiences thinner skin or bruising, but anyone who does should discuss these issues with the prescribing allergist before deciding to stop using the medication altogether.

P.S.  Be sure to call your physician if you experience any asthma medication side effects that are troubling or interfering with your normal daily routines.
