FORWARD THINKING

A study with results published in the Annals of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology suggests that pregnant women who take antibiotics have a greater risk of giving birth to children who develop asthma. There is concern regarding the increasing prevalence of asthma since the number of asthmatics has doubled in the last three decades. Research involving close to 300 children indicated that 22 percent of the children born to mothers who took antibiotics while pregnant were diagnosed with asthma by their third birthday, as opposed to 11 percent of the children of mothers-to-be who did not take antibiotics. This would suggest that pregnant women avoid taking antibiotics whenever it is a safe option to do so.

P.S. There are many studies being conducted with hopes of determining ways to curb the rapid rise in asthma rates.
