FOODS THAT TRIGGER ASTHMA
Foods are not a common asthma trigger; however, asthma can be affected by the foods you eat. Sulfites are often used to preserve food, and sulfites are also known to contribute to asthma attacks when eaten in higher amounts. Some common high-sulfite foods include dried fruits and veggies, packaged potatoes, bottled lemon and lime juices, pickled foods, shrimp, and alcoholic beverages like wine and beer. If you also have food allergies, asthma can increase food allergy reactions, and food allergy reactions that cause breathing difficulties can also be mistaken for an asthma attack. If you are coughing, wheezing, and having difficulty breathing but have no other symptoms, you are likely experiencing an asthma attack rather than an allergic reaction.
P.S. By law, foods preserved with sulfites must disclose this information on the label. Foods that are meant to be eaten raw, like fresh fruits and vegetables, cannot legally be preserved with sulfites.
