FLOORED
The 2013 issue of Environmental Science & Technology indicates that exposure to vinyl flooring can be linked to the development of health issues, such as asthma, in infants and children. Some children’s rooms and many daycare and school facilities use areas of vinyl flooring. Vinyl, or polyvinyl chloride (PVC), contains “phthalates,” ingredients that render the product flexible and durable. It was found that children who had PVC flooring in their bedrooms were more likely to develop asthma. This further emphasizes asthma risk factors resulting from exposure to chemicals with properties that adversely affect the body. Other products containing such chemicals include toys and food packaging, which are also potentially hazardous to children’s developmental health.
P.S. Chemical compounds that leach out of vinyl products used indoors become airborne, mix with dust, and can be easily inhaled.
