COEXISTENCE
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disease that affects the myelin coating of nerve fibers in the body. In effect, the body attacks itself in a manner that is similar to its bold attack on allergens. Many medical studies have attempted to determine whether a specific environmental allergen is associated with the development of MS. While allergies are very common in people, there does not seem to be a definitive link between allergies and the development of MS. The two conditions can exist together, but not cause one another. Individuals with MS often have allergies as well. Some allergy symptoms like coughing and congestion may make MS symptoms seem worse. Controlling allergic reactions helps MS patients cope better.
P.S. Allergy medications are available that do not add to the feelings of “fatigue” that many MS patients experience.
