CAUSES OF NON-ALLERGIC ASTHMA

Allergic asthma is triggered by an identifiable allergen. However, sometimes asthma symptoms are triggered by environmental influences including the weather or poor air quality, activities like exercise, or factors such as stress, anxiety, and respiratory infections. This type of asthma is known as non-allergic asthma. While allergic asthma causes an immune response throughout the body, non-allergic asthma causes a local response that occurs only within the airways. Symptoms are the same as those of allergic asthma, and they can be managed with medications and by identifying and avoiding triggers. There are many causes of non-allergic asthma, including cold or dry air, changes in weather, cigarette or woodstove/fireplace smoke, cleaning products and chemicals, drugs like aspirin and NSAIDs, and hormonal fluctuations.

P.S. Non-allergic asthma is less common than allergic asthma, more likely to start later in life, is usually more severe, and is more common in females.
