AWESOME ANTIHISTAMINES
Seasonal and year-long allergies affect more than 50 million Americans. Antihistamines are drugs that have been developed to control the body’s production of histamine during an allergic reaction. These drugs can be effective in reducing inflammation and mediating mucus production in nasal passages. All antihistamines, however, are not alike. The first-generation antihistamines proved beneficial, but they had the undesirable side effects of drowsiness, irritability, and dry mouth. Second-generation antihistamines, such as loratadine, fexofenadine, and cetirizine, are very effective in relieving common allergy symptoms without causing drowsiness. Since second-generation drugs generally have fewer side effects or drug interactions, medical professionals deem them safe to take when needed or on a daily basis as prescribed.
P.S. Corticosteroid nasal sprays are sometimes prescribed for daily use to control nasal allergy symptoms.
