ASTHMA IN INFANTS AND TODDLERS
If babies have a persistent cough, trouble breathing, make wheezing noises, or are quick to tire during play, they may be suffering from asthma. The causes of asthma are unknown, but a history of respiratory viruses is one of the most common factors in children who develop asthma before age five. For babies six months old or younger, viruses are the most common trigger of acute asthma episodes. Asthma can be challenging to diagnose in young children. The lung function test that is normally used to diagnose adults does not work well in children. Responses to asthma medications may be used for diagnosis instead. Medicines used to treat infants and toddlers are easier to administer in inhaled form (through inhalers).
P.S. More than half of children who develop asthma show some signs of the condition before age five.
