ASTHMA AND STRESS
Stress does not cause asthma, but stress can make asthma symptoms flare. Worries about family, school, or work increase anxiety so that breathing becomes rapid and shallow. Hyperventilation increases anxiety, anxiety exacerbates stress, and asthma symptoms become worse. These emotional and physical responses create a vicious circle that can quickly spin out of control. It is important to find ways to manage stress so that emotional responses do not trigger asthma attacks. Try to recognize the situations that are stressful and avoid, whenever possible, things that are emotionally upsetting. Inform the doctor about any stress-related triggers that may be causing worsened symptoms. Medications might need to be changed to manage escalated asthma episodes.
P.S. Yoga helps strengthen core muscles needed for breathing and develops relaxation techniques to reduce stress.
