ASTHMA AND ORAL HEALTH
The American Dental Association (ADA) recognizes a link between dental problems and certain asthma medications. Since asthma is the most prevalent chronic disease in children, medications are often sweetened in order to be more appealing to youngsters. These sweetened remedies may need to be taken throughout the day for optimal control of asthma symptoms. Sugars that remain on the teeth encourage the growth of bacteria that can cause tooth decay. If children must take sugary medications, they can still protect their teeth by rinsing their mouths out with water after each dose. If dental problems do arise, talk to the allergist about alternative medications for asthma treatment that may pose fewer risks to dental health.
P.S. More than six million children under the age of eighteen have asthma, and the disease affects more boys than girls.
