ALLERGEN IMMUNOTHERAPY
Allergen immunotherapy is a treatment for allergies. It involves exposing the patient to small, gradually increasing doses of an allergen. Immunotherapy helps build up a tolerance to the allergen in order to reduce or eliminate allergy symptoms. Tolerance for the allergen typically continues after immunotherapy ends. The long-term success rate of immunotherapy varies. Several environmental allergies can now be treated, including pollen allergies, mold allergy, animal dander, dust mites, and cockroach allergy. In addition to reducing symptoms, it may help prevent new allergies and stop allergic diseases and asthma progression. Types of therapy include allergy shots and under-the-tongue tablets. Talk to an allergist about how allergy symptoms affect daily activities and health to see if immunotherapy may be beneficial.
P.S. Food allergy immunotherapy is available for peanut allergy.
