PEN PALS
Although many people who have allergies are aware of them, some individuals may have an allergic reaction to substances for which there have been no prior allergy diagnoses. Should the responses be severe, such as a threat of anaphylactic shock, it is critical that a viable line of defense is available. Many states are considering the option of mandating that public schools maintain EpiPens, medical devices used to deliver measured doses of epinephrine for the treatment of acute allergic reactions. In addition, the move to require that EpiPens be available in facilities that serve food is also being considered. Pharmaceutical companies are joining in the initiative by offering subsidies and grant programs to make these medical devices more affordable.
P.S. According to UCLA’s Food and Drug Allergy Care Center, 20 percent of Americans are allergic to something.
