ASTHMA TREATMENT OPTIONS
Although asthma can’t be cured, it can be treated and managed. Asthma causes swelling in the airways, excess mucus production that can clog airways, and muscles that tighten around the airways, all of which make breathing more difficult. Asthma medications target these three changes to make breathing easier. There are generally four types of asthma treatment through medication. Quick-relief medications are usually breathed in through an inhaler. Controller medications can be taken daily in pill form to correct changes in airways. Quick-relief and controller medications are often used in tandem to treat both persistent symptoms and acute attacks. People with certain types of persistent asthma may be candidates for periodic infusions or injections to prevent swelling in the airways.
P.S. Asthma can be managed in part by controlling one’s environment and avoiding triggers that lead to acute asthma attacks.
