ALLERGIES TO OUR FURRY FRIENDS

“Pet allergies” usually refer to dog and cat allergies, and people are twice as likely to be allergic to cats than dogs. Pet hair itself is not an allergen (a substance that causes an allergic reaction). It’s the proteins found in pet dander, saliva, and urine that people have an allergic reaction to. These collect on a pet’s fur, among other places, so when we pet our furry friends, an allergic reaction may follow if the immune system is sensitive to these proteins. Airborne pet allergens can land on the membranes lining the eyes and nose, so pet allergy reactions often include the irritation of these areas and may include swelling, itching, inflamed eyes, and a stuffy nose.

P.S. Dust, pollen, and other allergens can collect on a pet’s fur, making the animal more likely to cause an allergic reaction.
