ALLERGIC SHINERS

Dark circles under the eyes that resemble bruises are sometimes mistaken for “black eyes” or “shiners” that are caused by injury.   Allergic shiners are discolorations that appear under the eyes as a result of sinus blockage caused by allergies.  When the tissues in the nasal passages and cavities swell in response to allergens, blood and fluids may pool under the eyes, creating a blue or purplish appearance.  Although allergic shiners can be unsightly, they are not considered to be medically serious.  Taking allergy medications as prescribed and applying cold compresses to the ocular area can help shrink dilated blood vessels and minimize swelling.  Within a few days, discoloration usually becomes less noticeable.

P.S.   Lack of sleep; dehydration; iron deficiency; and age-related, thinner skin can be responsible for dark circles under the eyes.
