ASTHMA DURING PREGNANCY
The normal ups and downs of hormone levels during pregnancy sometimes aggravate asthma symptoms by causing increased inflammation in the airways. Achieving good control of any changes in symptoms is critical to the well-being of both the mother and the unborn child. Poorly controlled asthma has been associated with perinatal mortality, low birth weight, pre-eclampsia, and preterm birth. Reducing these potential medical complications becomes a priority during pregnancy. Monthly asthma check-ups enable healthcare providers to monitor the effectiveness of medications and adjust dosages whenever necessary. Take asthma medications as prescribed and try to avoid things that may make asthma worse. Well-controlled asthma during pregnancy helps insure that the fetus is getting the oxygen it needs.
P.S. When asthma is well-controlled, symptoms are minimal, sleep is uninterrupted, and normal activities can be performed.
