ASTHMA CATEGORIES
Asthma is classified into four categories based on how often symptoms are exhibited and how well an individual breathes. The types are mild intermittent, mild persistent, moderate persistent, and severe persistent. Mild intermittent asthma, the least severe, is when symptoms occasionally occur, up to two days per week. Mild persistent asthma is more than twice weekly. Moderate persistent asthma symptoms occur once each day. With severe persistent asthma, symptoms are happening several times every day. All four have wheezing, coughing, swollen airways, and mucus development in the airways in common. An allergist can prescribe medication, such as inhaled corticosteroids. It’s essential for patients to educate themselves no matter what asthma they have and to maintain an asthma action plan.
P.S. Even mild asthma has the possibility of increasing in severity, necessitating following the allergist’s treatment plan and having regular checkups.
