WINE ALLERGIES
When consumed in moderation, wine is known to have many health benefits including preventing heart disease, promoting longevity, and providing antioxidants. But if that daily glass of pinot is causing symptoms similar to food allergies, such as nasal congestion; burning, itching or swelling in the mouth, lips, or throat; hives; a rash; nausea; vomiting; diarrhea; or shortness of breath, you may have a wine allergy. More specifically, you may be allergic to a protein found in grapes. Alternately, you may have a sensitivity to the sulfites found in wine. This is particularly possible in people with asthma. Yeast and ethanol fining agents derived from milk, egg, and fish proteins are also potential allergens found in most wines.
P.S. Studies have shown that red wine is more likely to cause allergy symptoms than white wine.
