METAL MATTERS
For most people, nickel is a harmless metal found in items such as jewelry, paperclips, cell phones, keys, clothing zippers and buttons, cooking equipment, and money. If you have a nickel allergy, however, contact with the substance can cause severe dermatitis. Itchy red rashes with dry patches and blisters can occur on skin that touches anything containing nickel. Nickel can also be found in some foods which, when consumed, can cause extreme itching all over the body; patches of thick, scaly skin; discoloration; and skin that feels warm to the touch. Because so many items are composed of a blend of different types of metal, it’s best for people with nickel allergies to avoid all metal contact with skin.
P.S. Metal workers, hair dressers, nurses, caterers, and people who regularly handle money are more likely to develop a nickel allergy.
