THE BENEFIT OF PEAK FLOW METERS
As with most chronic illnesses, asthma symptoms can increase or decrease over time. Environmental stressors like poor air quality can worsen symptoms, while a change in medication may be the cause of improvements. To properly manage fluctuations in symptoms, a peak flow meter may be recommended. This device measures the amount of air a patient can force out of his or her lungs in one breath. Regular use of a peak flow meter can help people living with asthma detect changes in their airways before symptoms begin, helping them not only avoid asthma attacks but also to determine the triggers that cause them. Peak flow meters can also warn of impending asthma attacks when no other symptoms occur.
P.S. Studies show that asthma patients who used a peak flow meter regularly were better able to avoid asthma attacks.
