POTENTIAL RISKS

Tattoos keep increasing in popularity.  While this form of self-expression is trendy, there are potential risks involved.  People may understand the risk of disease or infection from non-sterile instruments during the tattooing process.  However, they might not be aware that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued warnings about the potential for allergic reactions caused by the dyes in tattoo inks.  Inks are sometimes made from industrial-grade color additives such as those used in printing and automobile paint.  Color additives sometimes contain heavy metals and minerals.  These ingredients may cause allergic skin rashes and inflammation in sensitive individuals.  At the present time no inks have been approved by the FDA for use in tattoos.

P.S.  Tattoos are difficult to remove even with lasers.  Permanent changes in skin coloration can occur in the area that once had the tattoo.
