YEARLY INFLUENZA VACCINES

Influenza is a respiratory infection that can cause serious health consequences for people with chronic medical conditions like asthma, as well as those without. Each year the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) releases a vaccine that is designed to protect against the viruses that are most likely to be circulating during the upcoming flu season.  Since viruses change rapidly and immunities fade over time, receiving the newest influenza injection each year provides the most reliable protection.  Injections do not contain live strains of viruses and cannot actually cause the flu.  Shots may cause swelling or tenderness at the injection site, but these minor side effects are much less serious than the risks of hospitalizations due to flu-related complications.

P.S.  After vaccination, the immune system produces antibodies to protect the body from the virus strains contained in the shot.  The shot becomes fully effective after about two weeks.
