ENLISTING WITH ASTHMA
Regardless of the branch of the military, a medical history review is part of the enlistment process. In addition, all potential enlistees must pass a thorough medical examination conducted by a doctor at the Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS). When asthma is a factor, restrictions will apply. If no treatment for asthma or asthma symptoms was documented beyond the recruit’s 13th birthday, it is generally accepted that asthma is no longer an issue; otherwise, a medical waiver will be required. The granting of a waiver is predicated upon a wide variety of factors, including a determination of the current severity of the condition, as well as accounts of recent symptoms and treatments.
P.S. A pulmonary function test (PFT) can be used to determine whether or not to accept a waiver allowing an individual to pursue enlistment in the military.
