PATIENT RESPONSIBILITIES

Controlling asthma symptoms and preventing asthma attacks is a joint effort between the allergist and the patient.  Unless the patient actively commits to participating in his or her own asthma care, symptoms will be more difficult to control.  The patient should keep regular check-ups with the allergist, as asthma symptoms can change and medications may need adjusting. The patient should take medications regularly as prescribed and not decide to skip doses when symptoms seem to be under control.  By keeping a record of things or situations that trigger asthma symptoms, the patient can work to avoid these triggers.  Whenever the patient wholeheartedly accepts his or her responsibilities in asthma care, symptoms are less likely to interfere with daily life.

P.S.  Ask the allergist to explain what a prescribed medication is intended to do and how quickly it should work to control symptoms.
