FINE FEATHERED FOE

As cute and entertaining as a pet bird may be, suffering allergic reactions to it may take the joy out of pet ownership. Birds can potentially elicit allergic reactions such as difficulty breathing, itchy or watery eyes and skin, sneezing or nasal congestion, and coughing. It is now known that the mites in the bird’s feathers are what trigger allergic reactions. Should you have allergic symptoms but insist on keeping your bird, you must take some cautionary steps. Do not let the bird fly loose, and be sure to keep it out of your bedroom. Have someone else clean the bird’s cage using boiling water. Dust more often using simple cleaning products like vinegar and water.

HINT:  There is medication available that helps alleviate pet allergies. Consult with your allergist to learn about your options.
