BEING PREPARED

Many schools and universities require students to have physicals before attending classes or partaking in sports activities.  Conditions like asthma are usually cited on these forms as well as any limitations in physical activities that need to be observed.  When parents or guardians of asthmatics submit this paperwork, they should also be sure to include some copies of the student’s most current Asthma Action Plan. An Asthma Action Plan contains specific information about symptoms experienced by a student during an attack as well as medications that are needed to relieve these symptoms.  When school personnel are well-informed about a student’s asthma condition, they are more able to respond appropriately when asthma symptoms occur during the school day.

P.S.  An Asthma Action Plan form is available on the web at aafa.org.  This standardized form can be downloaded, printed, and filled out with the patient’s allergist.
