FOOD ALLERGY MYTHS

There is quite a bit of information—both myth and fact—available today regarding food allergies. True food allergies are actually relatively uncommon. While 25% of people believe they are allergic to a food, only about 8% of children and 2% of adults have an real food allergy. And while people commonly refer to milk “allergies,” most people actually have a lactose “intolerance,” which is characterized by bloating, cramping, and gas. Some people believe that food allergy reactions are mild, but people with food allergies can have very serious, and even fatal, reactions. Although certain food additives cause problems in some people, the vast majority of food allergies are to natural foods.

P.S. Only eight allergens are responsible for more than 90% of serious food allergy reactions.
