AN OUNCE OF PREVENTION

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that people six months or older receive a flu vaccination annually.  The more people who are vaccinated, the fewer serious flu-related illnesses and hospitalizations occur.  The composition of the influenza vaccine is evaluated each year.  Vaccines are modified when necessary to protect against the most prevalent viral strains predicted to circulate in the upcoming flu season.  Most vaccines contain a small amount of egg protein.  People with confirmed allergies to egg protein may wish to first discuss the advisability of getting a flu shot with an allergist.  For the majority of people, even pregnant women and those suffering from chronic diseases, the shots are safe and effective.

P.S.  Protection from the flu does not occur immediately after being vaccinated.  It takes two weeks for the flu shot to be effective.
