A VICIOUS CIRCLE

Although some over-the-counter decongestant nasal sprays are very effective in relieving occasional nasal congestion, these sprays can lead to more congestion if used too frequently.  Prolonged overuse can result in rhinitis medicamentosa, or nasal rebound.  This condition occurs when the mucous membranes in the nose have become so irritated and inflamed that they produce even greater quantities of mucus.  The more frequently the spray is used, the worse the congestion gets.  Stopping usage is essential.  When nasal congestion is brought about by allergies, a doctor may prescribe a corticosteroid nasal spray that can be used long-term.  The advantage of the prescription medication is that it does not have the same irritating effects on nasal membranes.

P.S.   Read the warnings on the labels of over-the-counter decongestant nasal sprays and do not use for longer than directed.
